Farmed seaweed grows from seeds embedded in lines attached to the farm infrastructure. Our first 6km of seeded line was deployed in October 2021 and harvested in spring 2022. We produced an estimated 60 tonnes of sugar kelp - the seaweed obviously enjoys the conditions in Loch Scridain!
Primary processing is still a challenge in the seaweed industry. Thanks to an award from Argyll and Bute Council's Islands Infrastructure Fund, we have been developing options for shore side processing facilities at Bendoran. In 2023 we are focusing on exploring and refining drying methods.
This year our operations are being funded by the Co-op Carbon Innovation Fund as we investigate uses for our seaweed that help to cut carbon emissions.
Grant funding for our seaweed farm has enabled us to employ a part-time Aird Fada Project Officer, Leigh Eisler, and other local people, including fishermen, for seasonal operations and ongoing maintenance. In the future, we hope we can create opportunity by adding value to our raw seaweed, either by developing our own products or by selling seaweed to local businesses.
