We are now into our fourth year of seaweed farming at Aird Fada, we are deploying kelp to grow on the farm for projects including bioplastics, novel animal feeds and biostimulants! We are supplying sugar kelp and winged kelp to Eco Cascade for bioplastics and experimenting with furbelows for a new fertiliser.
Primary processing is still a challenge in the seaweed industry. Thanks to an award from Argyll and Bute Council's Islands Infrastructure Fund, we have developed a shore side processing facility at Bendoran to dry premium food grade seaweed. In 2024, we working with Eco Cascade in Kyle of Lochalsh to dry seaweed in bulk for animal feed and bioplastics.
At Aird Fada, we are monitoring the effect of our seaweed farm on the local environment over the years and across the seasons. It is important for us ton understand how seaweed farming impacts our local eco-systems and biodiversity. We have partnered with Seaweed Gen to develop methods for monitoring aquatic activities at the farm.
This year our operations are being funded by the Co-op Carbon Innovation Fund as we investigate uses for our seaweed that help to cut carbon emissions.
Grant funding for our seaweed farm has enabled us to employ a part-time Aird Fada Farm Manager, Leigh Eisler, and other local people, including fishermen, for seasonal operations and ongoing maintenance. In the future, we hope we can create opportunity by adding value to our raw seaweed, either by developing our own products or by selling seaweed to local businesses. If you have any queries, Leigh can be contacted through her email address leisler@swmid.co.uk
