The need for fit for purpose infrastructure in the Sound of Iona has been recognized by the local community for many years. The Sound of Iona Harbours Group was revived in 2012 and became a sub-group of SWMID. Funding from LEADER in 2013 enabled the Harbours Group to commission the Sound of Iona Harbours Master plan which lays out 12 development concepts. These are outline in nature and were intended to inform thinking and priorities at that stage.
Fèis Mhuile was revived in Bunessan in 2015 with the support of SWMID. Over a weekend in February, tutors from all over Scotland provide tuition for the children of Mull and Iona in traditional song, dance, drama, and music, celebrating our area’s culture, heritage, and community.
For more information contact Jennifer Johnston, Chairperson by email or find Fèis Mhuile on Facebook.
The Ross of Mull and Iona Gala was created in 2015, with the support of SWMID and now operates independently. This annual event takes place over a fortnight every summer and celebrates the area and its people. Events range from the opening float parade in Fionnphort to the Sound of Iona Dinghy Race, the Bunessan Fives Football Tournament and the Scarecrow Trail, culminating in the Bunessan Show Dance.
