Thanks to a grant from the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund we have installed infrastructure on a 6 hectare site at Aird Fada in Loch Scridain ready for operations to begin in Autumn 2021.
We will begin with seeding 2ha of the site by October 2021 with profits made from the first year of production to enable adding seeded lines to increasing production in 2022.
Seaweed can be sold as a wet or dry material and we are making plans to develop shore side drying facilities at Bendoran to give us the flexibility to produce both in response to market preferences.
A full-time asset manager job will be created in 2021 and the farm will also generate contract work for local fishermen. In the future, we expect to increase our workforce and offer training opportunities.
In the future we also hope to add value to the raw seaweed, either by developing our own valued added products or by selling a proportion of seaweed locally to create business opportunities.
